Café Terrace at Night is a celebrated 1888 painting made in Arles by Vincent van Gogh. The work depicts a café lit up at night, overlooking a lively yet quiet square. The intense yellow of the artificial lights contrasts with the deep blue of the starry sky, creating a warm, enveloping atmosphere.
The vibrant brushstrokes and accentuated perspective lead the eye along the street, suggesting movement and depth. Van Gogh does away with black, entrusting colour with the task of evoking emotion, intimacy and the poetry of the city at night.
