The artwork
The title “Supremus” recalls the journal and the collective that Malevich envisaged to spread his artistic vision: an art free of any reference to reality, in which geometric forms and pure colours express the “supremacy” of feeling.
The painting features rectangles, squares and lines in dynamic balance on a light background. The composition is essential yet rich in visual tension, as if the elements were floating in space. Colour represents nothing: it becomes the absolute protagonist.
This work is among the most emblematic of the Suprematist journey, demonstrating the definitive break with figuration and the move towards a spiritual dimension of art. It is now considered an icon of the Russian avant-garde and of 20th-century abstraction.
