The painting "Sunset at Castiglioncello" by Giovanni Fattori is a significant work produced by the Macchiaioli master in a period of full artistic and personal maturity, between 1890 and 1895.
In this work, Fattori paints a seascape at sundown, with the sky ablaze with vivid colours and a sea that may appear choppy near the shore before stretching out calmly towards the horizon. A distinctive element of the work is the solitary figure of a man, seen from behind, watching the scene.
