The artwork

Colour Study: Squares with Concentric Circles is one of Kandinsky's most recognisable works and embodies his deep conviction of the emotional and spiritual power of colour. It consists of a grid of squares, each containing concentric circles of different hues.

Each circle or ring is painted in distinct colours (yellows, reds, blues, greens, violets) that interact with one another to produce different emotional sensations and "vibrations". Kandinsky believed that every colour had a temperature and sound of its own, and that combinations of colours could influence the soul of the viewer. For example, yellow was associated with earthly energy and acidity, while blue was associated with spirituality and the infinite.

This visual study served to illustrate his theories, set out in his famous treatise Concerning the Spiritual in Art. The work is not intended as a representational image, but as a pure experiment in synaesthesia and in the capacity of colour to elicit direct psychological and emotional responses.
