The artwork
In “Stenographic Figure” the pictorial space comes alive with swirling signs, calligraphic lines, schematic figures and contrasting colours. On a luminous background, Pollock traces two anthropomorphic figures — almost stylised silhouettes — arranged in a scene of encounter or confrontation, with a table that separates and unites them at the same time. Around them, the field is crossed by graphic signs and glyphs reminiscent of automatic writing, a visual language mixing image and symbol.
There is no fixed centre: the eye wanders, bouncing from one sign to another, seeking meaning in the ordered chaos of the canvas. This dialectic between figure and abstraction, between gesture and trace, reveals a need to communicate something ancestral, primordial — perhaps a dialogue between consciousness and the unconscious, between form and impulse. For Pollock, “Stenographic Figure” marks a moment of intense experimentation: art is no longer description, but act, impulse, the writing of the soul.
