The artwork
"Lo staffato" is a famous painting by Giovanni Fattori, created around 1880. The painting depicts a dramatic episode: a wildly racing horse drags its rider, whose foot is caught in a stirrup. The soldier's body, helpless and supine, leaves a trail on the arid ground. The landscape is barren and desolate, a pale, cloudy sky looms over an ochre-toned earth, creating a stark and painful atmosphere. The figures of the horse and rider are almost black, backlit, accentuating the sense of tragedy.
Although the painting does not depict a specific event, it becomes a universal symbol of the futility and cruelty of war, as well as the individual suffering it entails. The dragged soldier represents the disappointment of those who fought for an ideal that, in some way, was betrayed or led to unexpected outcomes.
