The artwork
A brilliantly luminous historical view of St Peter’s Square by Gaspare Vanvitelli. Bernini’s colonnade is prominently depicted. The obelisk dominates the centre, surrounded by human figures engaged in various activities. Carriages are shown on the right of the painting. Above the scene is a leaden sky in grey-blue tones with a few clouds at the edges. In the background are the dome of St Peter’s and the Roman palazzi. The painting is undated; this picture too is part of the prolific output Vanvitelli produced during his stays in Rome.
The painting is part of a private collection.
