The artwork
A distinctive and original view of St Peter’s Square with the colonnade under construction prominently shown, by Lievin Cruyl. It is an 18th-century engraving which on the left side shows scaffolding for the construction of a column and the workmen labouring on it, some of whom are bringing stones on carts. It is a perspective work: the colonnade extends from the right-hand side, with St Peter’s and the Roman palaces in the background. In the square, townspeople and carriages can be made out.
The painting is on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
