The painting St Paul Preaching in Athens by Giovanni Paolo Pannini depicts the moment when the apostle proclaims the Christian God to the Athenian philosophers. The scene takes place in an imposing classical setting, with St Paul at the centre preaching with inspiration, while the audience shows varied reactions, from doubt to interest.
Pannini combines the religious theme with his passion for ancient architecture, creating a theatrical backdrop that exalts the solemnity of the Christian message. The light highlights St Paul, a symbol of divine truth confronting the pagan culture of antiquity.
