The artwork
Original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the rectangular square, with St. Mark's Basilica and the towering bell tower at its center, while other Venetian buildings are arranged on the sides. People are gathered in the square, depicting scenes of daily life. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto painted many variations of this painting, exhibited at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard Art Museums, USA.
