The artwork
Original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. St. Mark's Basilica is behind the viewer; in the foreground there are the three flagpoles, and further back there is the rectangular square with its buildings flanking the sides. In the square there are several stalls displaying scenes of daily life. In the background we can see the church of San Geminiano, while on the left, there's a portion of St. Mark's bell tower. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1735. Two other variations of this work were painted by Canaletto.
