An original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the rectangular square, with the Basilica of San Marco on the left, while the campanile soars in the centre. Behind the campanile a large Venetian palace overlooking the square can be seen. People fill the square in scenes of everyday life. In the background the two columns of Venice and the island of San Giorgio Maggiore can be made out.
The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto painted numerous variants of this picture. The work is on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille, France.
