The artwork
Original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the rectangular square, with St. Mark's Basilica on the left, and the bell tower in the center. Behind the bell tower, there's a large Venetian palace overlooking the square. People are gathered in the square, depicting scenes of daily life. In the background, the two columns of Venice and the island of San Giorgio Maggiore can be seen.
The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Numerous variations of this painting have been painted by Canaletto. The work is exhibited at the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Lille, France.
