The artwork
Original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is a rectangular square, with St. Mark's Basilica at its center, and the bell tower rising to one side. Opposite the bell tower there is a large Venetian palace overlooking the square. People are gathered in the square, depicting scenes of daily life. On the left side of the painting there are curtains used to shade the buildings from the morning sunlight. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1720. Canaletto painted many variations of this painting.
