The artwork
Original 18th-century engraving of Piazza San Marco, created by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, with pen, ink, and watercolor on paper. In the foreground is the rectangular square, with the Basilica in the background and the great bell tower of San Marco to the side. On the left side is a large Venetian palace overlooking the square and the clock tower. People are gathered in the square, depicting scenes of daily life.
The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon. The work is dated 1760.
