An original and luminous 18th-century view of St Mark's Square, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is a section of the Doge's Palace. The gaze looks towards the Piazzetta; in the distance one sees the soaring bell tower and the other Venetian palazzi. There are people in the square, with scenes of everyday life. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
