The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century view of Piazza San Marco, from the colonnade of the Procuratie Nuove, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, on the right side, there is a detail of the colonnade, with several notables gathered. Further in the background there is the bell tower of San Marco and the Basilica, with the square bustling with tourists and residents.
The sky is clear and there are no clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1756. Three other variations of the same work exist.
