The artwork
Original 18th-century view of the interior of St. Mark's Basilica, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, we can see the series of arches, all finely decorated with gold mosaics, which form the Basilica's supporting colonnade. At the top center there is the Venetian flag. At the foot of the church there are worshippers praying during the ongoing service. Light enters from the stained-glass windows on the right. Thus, the Basilica features areas of light alternating with areas of shadow.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1755.
