The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the Basilica, finely rendered by Canal, with the adjoining Doge's Palace. In the square are some stalls, and the three flagpoles fly no flags or banners. The sky is clear, but with a few clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated about 1740. Canal created other variants of this work.
The painting is part of a private collection.
