The artwork
Original eighteenth-century view of Piazza San Marco, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the rectangular square, with the Basilica of San Marco on the left side, while the Doge's Palace can be admired next to the cathedral. Facing the square are the three flagpoles, empty, flying. Scenes of daily life are depicted in the square. On the left side, the steps leading up to the bell tower can be glimpsed. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1735. Canaletto painted numerous variations of this painting.
