Original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the St. Mark's Basilica, flanked by the Doge's Palace. Opposite these two monuments there are the flagpoles and banners of Venice. The square is bustling with stalls depicting scenes of daily life. The sky is clear and almost cloudless.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. A variant of this painting by Canaletto exists. The work is part of a private collection.
