The artwork

St Mark is a painting by Andrea Mantegna, signed and datable to 1448, held in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main. It is the artist's earliest known work.

In that year the seventeen-year-old Mantegna regained his independence after six years spent in the workshop of Francesco Squarcione.
