The artwork
"St John on Patmos and Scenes from the Passion" is a work by Hieronymus Bosch from the late 15th century, combining mystical vision and religious narrative. At the centre is St John the Evangelist on the island of Patmos, absorbed in contemplation and inspired by divine revelation. Around him, in small episodes, unfold the scenes of the Passion of Christ, included with great narrative and symbolic care. Bosch uses an elaborate composition in which the landscape and secondary figures lead the viewer's eye through the different moments of the sacred story.
The intense colours, minute details and symbolic presences reflect the artist's visionary style and his attention to the moral meaning of the scenes. The work invites meditation and spiritual reflection, fusing devotion, imagination and theological depth in a rich, evocative visual language.
