The artwork
Saint John the Baptist is one of Leonardo da Vinci's last masterpieces, created between approximately 1513 and 1516. Housed in the Louvre in Paris, the painting depicts the saint in half-length, shrouded in darkness, with an enigmatic expression and a faint smile. With his right hand raised, John points to the sky, alluding to the coming of Christ, while in his left he holds the slender cruciform staff, his traditional attribute. The warm light shaping the body and face emerges from the dark background thanks to the extraordinary use of sfumato, Leonardo's signature technique, which creates soft transitions and atmospheric depth.
The work combines mysticism and sensuality, blending spirituality and humanity in perfect balance. Saint John the Baptist represents a synthesis of Leonardo's exploration of light, form, and the mystery of the human soul.
