The artwork
The St Andrew by Masaccio, painted around 1426 for the Pisa Polyptych, depicts the apostle in a frontal pose, with the X-shaped cross typical of his martyrdom. The figure is solid and monumental, built up through careful use of light and chiaroscuro, which lends volume and realism to the body. The stern, concentrated face expresses a deep human spirituality.
The garment falls in simple yet convincing folds, underlining Masaccio's interest in the natural rendering of forms and in a new sculptural dignity for the sacred figure.
