The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the Piazzetta in Venice and the pier with Riva degli Schiavoni, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The Grand Canal is in the foreground. Many boats of various sizes are navigating. The bell tower of St. Mark's Square is further in the background, along with the Doge's Palace and other Venetian palaces arranged side by side along the Riva degli Schiavoni, separated only by bridges. The Riva degli Schiavoni quay, bustling with people, is used as a landing stage for smaller boats, including gondolas. The sky is slightly cloudy, tinged with light blue and light pink clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Canaletto created other variations of this work.
