The artwork

Beach at Gravelines (1883) by Georges Seurat is a work exploring life on the coast and the stillness of a seascape. The scene shows human figures in the distance, scattered along the beach, while sea and sky create a wide, bright and serene expanse. Here Seurat experiments with his first approaches to the technique that would become Pointillism, with short brushstrokes and carefully studied colour juxtapositions to capture light and atmosphere. The composition is balanced and geometric: the figures and natural elements are harmoniously distributed, leading the eye along the beach and towards the horizon.

The work reflects Seurat’s interest in visual perception and the scientific representation of colour, turning a moment of everyday life into a meditative, harmonious image. Beach at Gravelines is an early example of the artist’s ability to synthesise reality, light and atmosphere in an elegant, tranquil picture.
