Spartacus was a Thracian gladiator who lived in the 1st century BC and became famous for leading the largest slave revolt against the Roman Republic, known as the Third Servile War (73–71 BC). Initially captured and forced to fight in the arena, he escaped from a gladiatorial school in Capua and, together with other slaves, formed a rebel army that seriously challenged the Roman legions for over two years.
Gifted with charisma, military skill, and a strong vision of freedom, Spartacus defeated Roman troops several times, attracting thousands of followers among slaves, farmers, and deserters. However, he was finally defeated by General Marcus Licinius Crassus in 71 BC and died in battle. His has become a universal symbol of the fight against oppression and for freedom.
