Probably painted between 1870 and 1875, the picture belongs to a crucial period in Italian history, the post-unification years, marked by intense reflection on the events that had led to the formation of the Kingdom of Italy and on their social and human consequences.
The picture depicts a group of soldiers advancing along a dusty road, beneath a bright sky that is nonetheless not without a sense of weariness and resignation. Their march appears neither energetic nor impetuous, but rather measured by a slow, steady, almost tired rhythm. The soldiers' faces, though not defined in detail, suggest a sense of anonymity and collectivity. They are not heroic individuals, but ordinary men caught up in a context that transcends them.
