"Snow at Argenteuil" by Claude Monet is a painting created in 1875. It is part of a series of eighteen winter views that the artist created during a particularly snowy winter while he was living in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris.
In this work, Monet depicts the Boulevard Saint-Denis, the street where he lived. The center of the composition is dominated by the street itself, with tracks left by a cart that help create a sense of depth.
The human figures, barely hinted at with a few brushstrokes, suggest the presence of people heading to or coming from the railway station, located at the end of the boulevard and which connected Argenteuil to Paris.
The painting focuses on the atmosphere of the winter landscape, sacrificing detail in favor of rendering the effects of light and shadow on the snow.
