The Adoration of the Magi by Artemisia Gentileschi is a monumental work painted during the artist's Neapolitan period, characterised by a solemn and strongly narrative composition. The scene depicts the Gospel moment of the Epiphany: the three Magi, wrapped in richly decorated robes, pay homage to the Infant Jesus, whom Mary presents with a composed, maternal gesture, while Joseph looks on from a more withdrawn position.
Artemisia combines Baroque realism with intense spirituality, paying great attention to the expressiveness of the faces and the rendering of light. The light guides the eye towards the centre of the scene, emphasising the symbolic meaning of the event. The work reveals the painter's full artistic maturity, capable of handling complex spaces and large formats, and bears witness to her leading role in 17th-century sacred painting.
