The artwork
Allegory of Inclination is an oil painting on canvas made by Artemisia Gentileschi between 1615 and 1616 for the Galleria of Casa Buonarroti in Florence. The work represents the allegory of inclination, that is, of the natural vocation and creative talent needed for art. At the centre of the scene a young female figure, seated on a cloud, holds a compass in both hands, a symbolic instrument of measure, orientation and artistic wisdom, while a star shines above her head, guiding her gaze.
The painting, part of a series of personifications devoted to artistic virtues and qualities, celebrates the predisposition to creative work and reflects Artemisia's deep knowledge of painting. Famous also for its history of censorship and restoration, the work bears witness to her ability to combine symbolic sensibility and Baroque technique.
