In David and Goliath, Artemisia Gentileschi depicts the famous biblical episode with dramatic intensity and stark realism, typical of the Baroque. David is portrayed at the moment of triumph, his gaze focused and his body tense, as he holds the severed head of Goliath. The painter concentrates on the contrast between David's youth and agility and the heaviness and brutality of the defeated giant, emphasising the victory of virtue and courage over power and brute force.
The precisely calibrated light guides the eye towards David's face, highlighting emotion and determination, while the shadows accentuate the drama of the scene. The work reflects Artemisia's ability to depict heroic figures and convey narrative tension, overturning traditional conventions and lending dignity and centrality to biblical subjects with great emotional realism.
