The artwork
In Esther and Ahasuerus, Artemisia Gentileschi depicts a key episode from the Book of Esther, in which the queen courageously intervenes to save the Jewish people. Esther is shown with composure and determination as she addresses King Ahasuerus, who watches her intently from his throne. Artemisia places at the centre the psychological tension and the play of glances between the figures, emphasising the strength and intelligence of the female protagonist. The skilfully calibrated light illuminates Esther and makes her stand out from a setting rich in architectural details and precious fabrics, typical of the Baroque.
The work bears witness to the painter's mastery in combining biblical narrative, emotional realism and dramatic composition, overturning the traditional passive role of women in 17th-century art. Esther thus becomes a symbol of courage, strategy and moral virtue.
