The artwork

In the Conversion of the Magdalene, Artemisia Gentileschi depicts Mary Magdalene at a moment of intense spiritual transformation. The figure is caught in the act of abandoning her sinful life, her face turned towards heaven and her hands joined in prayer, while the details of the scene suggest introspection and redemption. Artemisia uses the chiaroscuro typical of the Baroque to create a strong contrast between the divine light illuminating the Magdalene and the surrounding shadows, emphasising the passage from sin to grace.

The rendering of the fabrics, the hair and the facial expression lends realism and emotional identification, making the sacred moment intensely human. The work reflects Artemisia's ability to convey deep emotions through female protagonists, transforming traditional religious narratives into experiences lived and shared by the viewer.
