In Susanna and the Elders, Artemisia Gentileschi interprets the biblical episode with a deeply innovative and empathetic eye. Susanna is depicted trying to escape the advances of the two elders, her body bent in a pose of evident unease and defence. The artist focuses attention on the young woman's emotional reaction, avoiding any idealisation and emphasising the psychological violence of the scene. The elders loom over her insistently, while Susanna becomes the dramatic fulcrum of the composition.
The use of light and colour heightens the tension, guiding the eye towards the central conflict. Artemisia overturns the male iconographic tradition, transforming Susanna from object of the gaze into a conscious, suffering subject. The work is considered one of the manifestos of the artist's sensitivity to the condition of women and her denunciation of the abuse of power.
