In the painting Jael and Sisera, Artemisia Gentileschi depicts one of the most intense and dramatic episodes of the Old Testament. The scene shows Jael at the decisive moment of killing Sisera, the enemy general of the Israelites, caught at a moment of extreme vulnerability. Artemisia emphasises the psychological tension through the strong contrast of light and shadow typical of Caravaggism, and a close-up composition that directly involves the viewer. Jael does not appear hesitant: her gesture is firm and determined, a symbol of courage and justice.
The painter overturns the traditional passive view of women, offering an image of a powerful woman at the heart of the action. The work also reflects Artemisia's personal experience, as she often used strong female figures to affirm her own artistic identity in a male-dominated world.
