In the Rape of Lucretia, Artemisia Gentileschi tackles one of the most dramatic subjects in Roman history, concentrating on the moment of greatest emotional tension. Lucretia is shown resisting the assault with all her strength, her body tensed and her face marked by fear and determination. Artemisia avoids any idealisation, choosing a realistic and intense rendering that highlights the violence of the act without indulgence.
The contrast between the light illuminating the female figure and the shadows enveloping the aggressor accentuates the moral conflict of the scene. Once again the painter overturns the traditional male narrative, restoring to Lucretia dignity and centrality as the active subject of her own story. The work thus becomes a reflection on violence, honour and inner strength, recurring themes in Artemisia Gentileschi's output.
