The artwork
A rare and original painting depicting the destruction of the Turkish fleet in Chesma Bay, painted by Jakob Philipp Hackert in 1772. The sea is filled with closely packed galleons. In the foreground, on the left, a burning galleon, its fire illuminating it. In the background, smoke rises, fueled by other fires on the galleons; several sailors in lifeboats are trying to save themselves.
The painting is on display at the Peterhof Palace, Petrodvorets, in St. Petersburg.
