A rare and original painting by Jakob Philipp Hackert depicting the wreck of a sailing ship near the coast in 1776. The sea is very rough, and the waves are crashing against the sailing ship, tilting it and causing it to take on water, pushing it toward the rocks on the shore. The vessel's fate seems decided; a second vessel can be seen offshore, perhaps too far away to provide rescue. Two spectators are on shore, while the sky is covered in large, dark clouds and a strong wind is blowing.
