A fine depiction by Jakob Philipp Hackert of a moment of bargaining between a shepherd and a merchant in the port of Monopoli. They are probably haggling over sheep, wool or cheeses. It is the shepherd who takes the initiative, trying to convince the merchant that the asking price is fair. The two are talking at the edge of the quay at Monopoli; the sea is calm, shaded in green and light blue.
The painting is on display at the National Museum of San Martino & Certosa, Naples.
