Septimius Severus was Roman emperor from 193 to 211 and the founder of the Severan dynasty. His rise marked a turning point, introducing the "dominate", in which the emperor was seen as dominus rather than as first among equals within the Senate. Severus initiated an imperial cult that foreshadowed a sacred monarchy, adopting the title dominus ac deus. His policies included military and economic reforms, as well as an ambivalent stance towards the Christians, alternating between tolerance and persecution
