“The Sermon to the Birds” is a celebrated fresco by Giotto di Bondone, painted between around 1295 and 1300 in the Upper Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. The artwork depicts Saint Francis preaching to a flock of birds, a symbol of his profound communion with nature and of a universal message of peace and harmony among all creatures. Giotto translates the miracle into a human and realistic language: the saint, in his Franciscan habit, bends gently towards the birds, which listen attentively and in orderly fashion. The sober landscape, the natural gestures and the innovative use of perspective give the scene an extraordinary emotional vitality.
With this fresco, Giotto renewed medieval painting, abandoning Byzantine abstraction for an art closer to reality and to human feeling, anticipating the sensibility of the Renaissance.
