The artwork
"Sermon to the Birds" is a famous fresco by Giotto di Bondone, created between 1295 and 1300 in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. The work depicts Saint Francis preaching to a group of birds, a symbol of his profound communion with nature and a universal message of peace and harmony among all creatures. Giotto translates the miracle into a human and realistic language: the saint, in Franciscan habit, bends gently toward the birds, who listen attentively and orderly. The sober landscape, the natural gestures, and the innovative use of perspective imbue the scene with extraordinary emotional vitality.
With this fresco, Giotto revitalizes medieval painting, abandoning Byzantine abstraction for an art closer to reality and human sentiment, anticipating the Renaissance sensibility.
