The artwork
"Untitled (Yellow, Red and Blue)" (1953) is an extraordinary example of the artistic peak of Mark Rothko in Color Field Painting. This work uses rectangles of colour with soft edges that seem to vibrate and pulsate. The blocks of radiant yellow, intense red and deep blue are arranged vertically, creating a formal balance that aims to communicate not forms but feelings.
Rothko applied the pigment in thin, almost luminous layers, which cancel out the surface of the canvas and generate an inner light. The contrast between warm and cool colours instils a sense of emotional tension and contemplation. The artist sought to establish a direct and intimate dialogue with the viewer, in which the contemplation of pure colour could evoke a profound, almost spiritualexperience, touching the chords of human tragedy and ecstasy.
