The artwork
Untitled (1952) marks one of the most mature moments in Mark Rothko's research, when the artist fully achieved his language of floating colour fields. The work presents large, overlapping rectangles of colour, soft and without sharp outlines, which seem to levitate on a luminous background. The intense tones, typical of this phase, converse with one another, creating a fragile yet deeply evocative balance. The paint surface is built up through thin glazes that give the fields an inner, almost atmospheric vibration.
Rothko does not set out to depict forms or narratives; instead he aims to generate an immediate emotional experience, capable of deeply engaging the viewer.
