The artwork
Untitled (14B) belongs to Rothko's transitional phase, following his "Surrealist" paintings and immediately preceding his mature "Color Field" style.
Although the specific colours are not universally documented as in other works, attention is focused on the emergence of rectangular fields of colour that begin to organise themselves vertically on the canvas, replacing the biomorphic forms that had dominated his art until then.
In this phase Rothko is still experimenting with texture and more defined edges, but the aim is clear: to free colour so that it can act as a pure, abstract entity. The work is an essential step towards his conviction that forms and colours should express the "basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom", without the distraction of any objective reference.
