The artwork

The Seed of the Areoi is one of the most enigmatic and symbolic paintings of Paul Gauguin’s Tahitian period. The work depicts a nude female figure, seated in a tropical setting, holding an intensely red fruit, interpreted as a symbol of fertility and primordial life. Beside her appears a second figure, mysterious and almost sculptural, recalling the presence of spirits or deities linked to the culture of the Areoi, a ritual brotherhood devoted to dances, myths and ancestral cults. The simplified forms, saturated colours and flat areas of colour enhance the archaic and spiritual dimension of the scene.

Gauguin depicts a myth, an echo of a primordial world that he believed survived in Polynesian life. The painting thus becomes an allegory of creation, of desire and of the sacred bond between humanity, nature and the divine.
