Giovanni Fattori, one of the leading exponents of the Macchiaioli movement, left numerous self-portraits that allow us to follow the evolution of his style and of his person over the years.
Fattori took up self-portraiture in his youth, often using these works as preparatory studies or as a means of exploring his own expressive abilities. Initially, his self-portraits show the influence of academic painting, with a certain attention to physiognomic detail and naturalistic rendering. However, when he joined the Macchiaioli group around the middle of the 19th century, his approach underwent a profound transformation.
