“Saramaru Dayu” by Katsushika Hokusai is part of the famous series “One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse” (Hyakunin isshu uba ga etoki), devoted to the medieval Japanese poetry anthology that gathers one hundred poems by one hundred different authors. In this sheet, Hokusai interprets the poem attributed to the poet Sarumaru Dayu, in which the bellowing of a stag among the autumn leaves evokes the melancholy of the season. The artist translates the text into an image through a hilly landscape, dotted with trees in red and blue tones, thatched houses and figures on the move, creating a scene suspended between the everyday and poetic vision. Made as a colour woodblock print during the Edo period, the composition shows Hokusai's full command of perspective and areas of colour, and is today considered one of the most evocative interpretations of the autumn theme in the ukiyo-e tradition
