The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century depiction of the church of Santa Maria Zobenigo, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The church rises majestically with its columns and dominates the small square in front, where scenes of everyday life unfold. A notable feature of the church is its statues, which seem almost to step out of their niches on the main façade. The bas-reliefs too have been finely painted by Canaletto. The morning sun lights up the square, with a few white clouds in the sky. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1760. Another variant of this work exists.
The painting is part of a private collection.
