The artwork

Original view of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, made by Lievin Cruyl in pen and brown ink with brush and grey wash over graphite. The Basilica dominates the picture; in the background, beyond the square, a few townhouses can be seen in the distance. The square in front of the Basilica is depicted empty except for a few townspeople. Cruyl probably wanted the Basilica to stand out to the viewer's eye. A similar copy of this painting exists.
